Pseudomonas corrugata is a phytopathogenic bacterium, causal agent of tomato pith necrosis, yet it is an ubiquitous bacterium that is part of the microbial community in the soil and in the rhizosphere of different plant species. Although it is a very heterogeneous species, all the strains tested were able to produce short chain acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) quorum sensing signal molecules. The main AHL produced was N-hexanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (C6-AHL). An AHL quorum sensing system, designated PcoI/PcoR, was identified and characterized. Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oil of Pulicaria odora L.

The chemical composition of the volatile oil constituent from Pulicaria odora L. roots has been analyzed by GC/MS. Twenty-seven components were identified, being thymol (47.83%) and its derivative isobutyrate (30.05%) the main constituents in the oil. Furthermore, the oil was tested against seven bacteria at different concentrations. Results showed that the oil exhibited a significant antibacterial activity.

Artificial neural network applied to prediction of fluorquinolone antibacterial activity by topological methods.

A new topological method that makes it possible to predict the properties of molecules on the basis of their chemical structures is applied in the present study to quinolone antimicrobial agents. This method uses neural networks in which training algorithms are used as well as different concepts and methods of artificial intelligence with a suitable set of topological descriptors. This makes it possible to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of quinolones. Analysis of the results shows that the experimental and calculated values are highly similar. New active drugs against liver stages of Plasmodium predicted by molecular topology.

ABSTRACT We conducted a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study based on a database of 127 compounds previously tested against the liver stage of Plasmodium yoelii in order to develop a model capable of predicting the in vitro antimalarial activities of new compounds. Topological indices were used as structural descriptors, and their relation to antimalarial activity was determined by using linear discriminant analysis. Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium DT 104 antibiotic resistance genomic island I in serotype paratyphi B

We have identified Salmonella genomic island I (SGI1) in an isolate of Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi B. This antibiotic-resistance gene cluster, which confers multidrug resistance, has been previously identified in S. enterica serotype Typhimurium phage types DT 104 and DT 120 and in S. enterica serotype Agona.

Novel Penicillin-Type Analogues Bearing a Variable Substituted 2-Azetidinone Ring at Position 6: Synthesis and Biological Evaluation

The synthesis and the biological activity of novel semi-synthetic β-lactam compounds containing an azetidinone moiety joined to the amino-nitrogen of the (+)-6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) as new antibacterial agents is reported. The synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against a panel of Gram positive and Gram negative pathogens and environmental bacteria. Effects of chitosan films on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella spp. in laboratory media and in fish soup.

The objective of this study was to assess the antimicrobial effectiveness of chitosonium acetate films on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus. The samples were tested in both laboratory conditions using Tryptone Soy Broth (TSB) and in a real food system using fish soup. The study was carried out at different temperatures (4, 12, and 37 degrees C) in order to discern the influence of such variables.
